Retrofitting with underfloor heating is all about upgrading for comfort and efficiency, and to do this most effectively, we recommend that every customer invest in underfloor heating insulation for their system. This allows your system to work to its full potential, providing a high level of heat output at a more cost-effective rate. In this guide, we’ll be going through all the reasons why underfloor heating insulation is so important.
We’ll give you all the information and advice you need to be able to make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing insulation for your retrofit project.
Can You Fit Underfloor Heating Insulation in a Retrofit System?
In a retrofit project, the biggest limitation is most likely your floor height, as underfloor heating will probably not have been taken into consideration during the build. Our low profile underfloor heating systems are perfect for retrofit projects as they require less build up room.
However, you will still have to plan carefully when it comes to including underfloor heating insulation as there won’t be much room to spare, even with a low profile underfloor heating kit.
If you're ready to start looking for your perfect underfloor heating system but aren’t sure where to start, our guide on how to select the right system will tell you everything you need to know.
Choosing the Right Underfloor Heating Insulation Boards
At UFH1, we offer two premium underfloor heating insulation types, designed to maintain maximum heat output and keep your space as warm as possible:
Standard Underfloor Heating Insulation
These XPS underfloor insulation boards are made of styrofoam and measure at 25mm and are perfect for insulation underneath and around the pipework of your underfloor heating system.
Premium Underfloor Heating Insulation
Our premium underfloor insulation boards are made from 18mm gypsum fibre. They have the highest heat output and most efficient running temperature of any type of retrofit underfloor insulation system on the market. There are a couple of options when fitting this underfloor heating insulation system:
- You can allow the boards to sit directly on the current surface and partly heat the subfloor, which, if concrete or similar, will eventually add to the overall thermal mass in time.
- If height is an issue, and you don’t want to heat the subfloor at all, you can use our foil barrier.
- For instances where the minimum height excluding floor covering can be between 24mm and 48mm, use our high density, high compressive strength XPS insulation.

Underfloor Heating Insulation FAQs
Is it worth it to insulate underfloor heating?
Yes, insulating your underfloor heating system is definitely worth it! Insulation means your heating will be more efficient, retaining more heat and reducing running costs. Underfloor heating insulation also speeds up the time it takes for your room to heat up, meaning you feel the benefits of your heating system faster.
What thickness of insulation for underfloor heating?
If you’re searching for underfloor heating insulation for a retrofit project where build up space is usually tight at around 20 to 50mm, we recommend you opt for either a 25mm XPS insulation board or a 24mm and 48mm high-performing XPS insulation.
Will underfloor heating insulation reduce my energy bill?
As long as it's fitted correctly, then underfloor heating insulation should reduce your energy bill. Insulation is designed to hold in heat, meaning your heating system won't have to use as much power to heat up your space. So if you’re looking to save on your energy bill, underfloor heating insulation is a great way to do so.
